The research mission of the institute is to explore how chemical processes work on a microscopic scale, to develop novel methods and systems for micro and nanochemistry, and to apply this knowledge to develop novel intelligent microsystem devices, e.g. for lab-on-chip technology. The goal of the institute is to focus expertise in the fields of micro and nanochemistry and microsystem technology which is dispersed at the University among different research groups in the Science and Engineering departments. In the institute, groups work together in a stimulating environment, sharing their knowhow, facilities, and creativity. A prominent activity of Cµ is currently to merge microchemistry and microelectronics. In this context, major research efforts are being made to design, construct and investigate components and integrated systems for the lab on microchip technology. The final goal is to install a full-fledged chemical laboratory on a microchip.
