Field-flow fractionation (FFF) comprises several flexible elution techniques for simultaneous separation and measurement. Separation takes place in a thin, open channel through which samples are transported by a laminar flow of liquid. A field, applied perpendicularly to the channel flow, partitions the various components into regions of different flow velocities. Asymmetrical flow FFF (AFFFF) is a type of flow FFF using only one permeable wall which serves as accumulation wall. Experiments show that the asymmetrical design separates faster and more efficient than the symmetrical channel.
